Graduate Placement Exam in Music Theory

The GPE in Music Theory consists of two separate exams:

  1. Ear Training

A harmonic progression in chorale-style is performed at the piano. You provide the soprano and bass voices as well as an harmonic analysis.

  2. Part-Writing and Analysis

Part-Writing: two phrases of a chorale with figured bass are given. The second phrase is missing some alto and tenor notes, which you supply.

Analysis: A section of a piano piece or song is given. You provide a harmonic analysis using roman numerals (with inversion symbols), a phrase analysis by indicating cadences, and a formal analysis.

Beginning in the fall 2015, there will be no retakes allowed for the GPE in music theory
